MRI Our MRI scanner is the best in the world and accredited by the American College of Radiology. We are the second only to the Mayo Clinic for acquiring a 3 Tesla magnet accreditation. Our Signa Excite 3.0T MRI by GE offers the most advanced imaging technology available. MR images are generated when a strong magnetic field and radio waves are combined with the hydrogen atoms in the tissues of the body. Using computers, this information is made into highly detailed pictures of various areas of the body. MR produces a high quality image, allowing for an extremely accurate diagnosis of your particular medical condition. MR is one of the safest, most comfortable imaging techniques available. There are no known side effects and no radiation is used. The examination is completely painless and all you need to do is relax and try to lie still. Usually, no preparation is required for this procedure. During your examination in the magnetic scanning room, an MR technologist will help you onto a padded table. The table on which you are lying will move smoothly into the magnetic opening. As the unit takes several series of scans, you will hear a sound similar to a drum beat. The entire procedure usually takes less than one hour. Throughout the study, patients are in contact with the MR staff by means of a special intercom and window. Please remember, however, to remain as still as possible. For most exams you may listen to music. You may bring your own CD or choose from our selection. Earplugs are also available. What to expect during your visit When You Arrive At VRMC As an outpatient, you should enter VRMC through the main lobby and proceed to the information desk where you will be asked to complete the necessary registration forms. Time Required For Your Scan You should plan on spending about 1 hour at VRMC for the exam, from start to finish. However, there may be some delays, and the procedure could take longer than anticipated. We are pleased to say, however, that the 3.0T MRI is the fastest scanner available. This means that children and patients whose medical conditions make it difficult for them to control movement are more easily and more accurately imaged than ever before. After Your Arrival and Registration You will be greeted by our MR staff. Before your examination begins, you will be asked to read and complete patient information and medical history forms. You will be directed to the dressing room and be asked to change into a gown and robe. Your personal items (i.e., jewelry, hairpins, hearing aids, credit cards, coins, keys, and watch) cannot be brought into the scanner. You will be given a locker to secure your belongings. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have about the MR study. Certain conditions may prevent you from having the scan. Please inform us if you: * have metal objects implanted in your body by either surgical procedure or by accident. ~this includes cardiac stents~ * have a cardiac pacemaker or other electronic medical aid * are pregnant * weigh more than 350 pounds. * have ever had a piece of metal embedded in your eye, even though it has been removed. After Your Scan After your exam, you may leave the facility and immediately resume your normal activity. A radiologist specially trained in MR will view your studies and call your doctor, who will relay the results to you.
