Pylori Breath Test

Definition
The H. Pylori Breath Test is a simple, non-invasive method for diagnosis of H. Pylori, a bacterial organism that can frequently cause stomach ulcers.  The Breath Test is especially helpful for patients that have previously treated for H. Pylori.

Alternative Names
C-Urea Breath Test for the detection of Helicobacter Pylori.

To Prepare For Test
Please make an appointment ahead of time at the laboratory for this test by calling (218) 741-3340 Ext. 2280.

It is necessary for you to fast for 6 hours before the test.  You should also be off antibiotics and bismuth for 1 month, and proton pump inhibitors (antacids) and sucralfate for 2 weeks prior to the test.

Who should take the test?
If you are pregnant or breast feeding you should not take this test.  Clinical studies have not been conducted in children and therefore it is not known whether or not testing is safe for them.  Persons concerned about very low doses of radioactivity may postpone the test or may decide to use an alternative means of diagnosis.  The test produces radiation exposure equal to 24 hours of normal background.  In animal experiments, such low doses of radiation do not carry measurable risk.  No studies have been conducted with C-urea to evaluate its potential for carcinogencity, impairment of fertility, or mutagencity.

How The Test It Performed
A capsule will be given for you to take with a little water.  Three minutes later a little more water will be given to you to drink.  The capsule should not be handled directly as this may interfere with the test result.  To avoid contamination by bacteria in the mouth, the capsule should be swallowed intact.  Do not chew the capsule.  After 10 minutes you will asked to blow into a silver colored balloon and then the technician will tie off the balloon to keep the air inside.  The balloon is sent to a laboratory for testing in Utah.

How The Test Will Feel
No blood is taken for this test, you simply take a capsule with a little water and 10 minutes later blow up a balloon.

When Your Results Will Be Available
Your results will be sent to your physician in about 1 week.  Follow instructions for checking back with him/her on the results of the text.

If you are unable to make your appointment, or have any questions regarding the procedure, Please call (218) 741-3340 EXT. 2280.
