Inflammatory Bowel Disease The term inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) covers a group of disorders in which the intestines become inflamed (red and swollen), probably as a result of an immune reaction of the body against its own intestinal tissue. Researchers do not yet know what causes IBD. Two major types of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease. Because inflammatory disease is a chronic disease (lasting a long time), people will often experience periods in which the disease flares up and causes symptoms such as fever, abdominal cramps and pain. Dr. Madan will give an overview of the disease and describe the symptoms, tests, prevention, and treatment. Manaasi Madan, M.D. Internal Medicine Duluth Clinic--Virginia Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. VRMC McMillan Auditorium Migraines Migraines are headaches that can cause significant pain for hours or even days. Symptoms can be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down. Some migraines are preceded or acompanied by sensory warning symptoms or signs (auras), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. A migraine is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Although there's no cure, medications can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Dr. Cowens will discuss the symptoms, causes, triggers, risk factors, complications, and treatments.
Kevin Cowens, Sr., M.D. Neurologist VRMC Neurology Services Thursday, April 8, 2010 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. VRMC McMillan Auditorium Is the Cause of Your Gastrointestinal Discomfort IBS or Celiac Disease? If your belly bafflfes you on a regular basis--gas, bloating, you name it--don't just assume it's irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or live with the discomfort. You may need to consider celiac disease, an intolerance to glutens (wheat, barley and rye grains) that damages the lining of your small intestine and prevents the body from properly absorbing food. While one out of every 133 Americans suffers from the disease, it's estimated that 97 percent of those affected are undiagnosed and untreated. It can take years before the disease is identified in patients but the faster you find it, the sooner you'll find relief. Dr. Din will describe the symptoms, how to test for the disease, and treatments.
Mairaj Din, MB, BS Internal Medicine Duluth Clinic--Virginia Thursday, May 13, 2010 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. VRMC McMillan Auditorium
